WILL SWAPPABLE BATTERY BRING NEW REVOLUTION IN ELECTRIC VEHICLE INDUSTRY ?

World is moving ahead with new inventions and technology adaptation. Urban population is increasing day by day and currently facing challenging of improving air quality and reducing carbon emission. Natural resources like gasoline are diminishing day by day and cost of which is increasing. To avoid this some countries in Europe have launched the European Green Deal to fulfil objective of Green Deal. After brainstorming the only one key solution discovered is electrification of Vehicles. Motorcycle industries key stakeholder are coming together to develop common technology worldwide to solve the Industry concerns.

WHAT ARE CURRENT ELECTROMOBILITY CHALLENGES?

Electromobility is only option available for motorcycle industry which will play major role for  future mode of transport and goods. If we see current challenge like charging time of batteries and mileage the only one solution overcome will be common battery specifications. Now there are different manufacturer having different batteries which is major drawback in Electric Vehicle. If all work together on common battery specifications, this will allow and enable the introduction of swappable battery stations in an efficient way.

Swappable battery station will definitely allow end user to exchange battery with fully charged one. Which will save their time and also swappable battery with advanced technology will drastically shorten charging time, delete range anxiety, and reduce costs for the final users. Also one more advantage Swappable batteries is it can be re-used and re-purposed of batteries for second life.

INVENTION OF SWAPPABLE BATTERY

Invention of Swappable Battery is to ease the end user to exchange battery at any Swappable battery station with just few minutes and with low cost. To fulfil the common goal consortium is formed with aim to facilitate the use of electric lightweight vehicles by means of swappable batteries and development in charging infrastructure for light weight vehicles like  L-category vehicles like mopeds, scooters, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles.

Swappable Battery

Consortium will be focusing on development of common battery specification and facilities of swappable battery stations also development in low voltage electromobility which is a key.

WHO ARE MEMBERS OF SBMC AND WHAT IS their COMMON goal

The Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium was founded in 2021 by the two-wheeler manufacturers Honda, KTM, Piaggio and Yamaha and has now grown to 21 members

This technology will only perform at its best if a common ground is found, and  common international standards can be adopted globally. For this reason, main players of the industry have founded the Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium in September 2021.

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd., Honda Motor Co., Ltd., KTM F&E GmbH, and Piaggio Group (PIA.MI) have officially signed the agreement for the creation of the Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium (SBMC)

The founding members of the consortium believed that the availability of a standardized swappable battery system would both promote the widespread use of light electric vehicles and contribute to a more sustainable life-cycle management of batteries used in the transport sector.

The Consortium started its activities in May 2021. The four founding members encourage all interested stakeholders to join the cooperation to enrich the Consortium’s expertise.

Now after one year on, the original four have been joined by 17 other members.

These members include other expertise in motorcycle manufacturers, as well as technology companies and others who work on the development of autonomous technologies.

Here is  full list of current SBC members sept 2022 as follows

Four Founder member of Swappable battery Motor Consortium established in Sept2021 by Honda, KTM, Yamaha and Piaggio

  • Honda – Motorcycle and car manufacturer founder member of SBC. Noriaki Abe, managing officer of motorcycle operations at Honda said  “The worldwide electrification effort to reduce CO2 on a global scale is accelerating, especially in Europe. For the widespread adoption of electric motorcycles, problems such as travel distance and charging times need to be addressed, and swappable batteries are a promising solution. Considering customer convenience, standardization of swappable batteries and wide adoption of battery systems is vital, which is why the four member manufacturers agreed to form the consortium.”
  • KTM – Motorcycle manufacturer. Stefan Pierer, KTM AG CEO joined with vision  “Sustainability is one of the key drivers to the future of mobility and electrification will play a major role in achieving this goal. For powered two-wheelers the constraints of electric drivetrains regarding range, charging time and initial cost are still evident. To overcome these challenges and provide a better customer experience, a swappable battery system based on international technical standards will become a viable solution. Considering the entire lifecycle, a widespread application of batteries compliant with a common standard will support secondary use as well as circular economy. We are glad to be part of the Consortium as we strive towards our goals in the e-mobility sector.”
  • Piaggio – Motorcycle and scooter manufacturer (two- and three-wheel). Michele Colaninno, Piaggio Group chief of strategy and product: “With the signing of letter of intent the signatories show their proactiveness vis-à-vis the major concerns of their customers and the political priorities as regards the electrification of vehicles. An international standard for the swappable batteries system will make this technology efficient and at the disposal of the consumers. Finally, a strengthened cooperation among manufacturers and institutions will allow the industry to better respond to the main challenges of the future of mobility.”
  • Yamaha – Motorcycle manufacturer. Executive Officer Takuya Kinoshita, chief general manager of Motorcycle Business Operations, Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd.: “I believe the creation of this Consortium holds great significance not just for Europe but the world as we move towards establishing standards for swappable batteries for light electric vehicles. I’m confident that through work like this, the technical specs and standards, that currently differ by regional characteristics or the state of the industry in different markets will be unified, and, in the future, will help lead towards maximizing the merits of electric power for customers on a global level.”
